The AIAS will be displaying the winning entries to the design competitions held in 2011. Stop by and see the concepts that your fellow students put forward from other schools and other countries. Evaluate how you might have addressed a particular challenge, and consider submitting for competitions in the future and seeing your own work displayed.

This architectural scavenger hunt explores many of the civic and community spaces in Downtown Phoenix. Participants will be grouped into teams of 4 and provided a list of ten locations. The names of the location will be blank, the teams will need to find the locations based on the descriptions and clues offered in the list.
At each location the teams will take an image of themselves and upload the image to the AIAS FORUM 2011 Facebook page. The first team to complete the full listing of 10 locations and upload their images at having visited each location will win individual prizes for their members.

During this workshop you will learn more about the National Architectural Accrediting Board, the purpose of accreditation, how visiting teams are selected and what you can expect as a member of a visiting team. Students who are interested in the accreditation process or serving on teams that will visit architecture programs in 2011 or 2012 are expected to attend. The opportunity for students to participate on the visiting teams is limited to AIAS members—one of your significant member benefits.

The AIAS Council of Presidents is a meeting of our chapter leaders. In this meeting the AIAS Board of Directors presents the current state of the organization, discusses matters of import to the organization, and entertains motions from chapters. Chapter leaders are required to attend this session, but all members are welcome to join us and see how the organization is run.

During this abridged version of his day-long workshop, you will learn from one of the most sought-after graphic instructors in the country. Participants will get an overview of graphic design and rendering techniques. You are encouraged to bring sketch pad and drawing utensils.

Presented by Harry Falconer Jr., AIA, NCARB and Martin Smith, AIA, NCARB, LEED Green Assoc.
How do you become an architect? What is the process? How long will it take? When can you start? These are just a few of the questions that will be answered as NCARB’s Director, IDP Harry M. Falconer Jr., AIA, NCARB, and Manager, IDP Martin Smith, AIA, NCARB, LEED Green Assoc., discuss the path to licensure. They will provide detailed information about the Intern Development Program (IDP) and how you can earn experience while you are still in school. They will share their own experiences and provide useful tips on how to get the most out of your career. Topics will include the requirements of licensure, the types of experience that qualifies for IDP credit, and how to maximize your mobility after licensure. Following the brief presentation, there will be an interactive question-and-answer session.

Career counselors (and more importantly, future employers) will tell you that the ability to speak before an audience is one of the most valuable skills you can bring to the job. Yet, studies show that more people are afraid of speaking in public more than they fear death. Topics that will be covered include: presentation of self, from how to shake hands, how to dress, and what manners and styles will help establish authority and credibility in front of a room; How to set up a room so the full attention of the audience is on your content and not on, “So why doesn’t somebody fix the lights?”. Presentation of Ideas, what tools can you use to organize and expand your knowledge of your topic? Slide deck design will be explored, as well as some resources that you can use to develop and polish your own speaking style.

A degree in architecture is becoming the new MBA. Architectural education is one of the last liberal arts degrees combing art, history, and science with problem solving skills. This workshop will provide career paths, both traditional and alternates to the traditional role of the architect. In addition, information on resources for careers in architecture and off the beaten path careers will be shared.

Join AIAS Freedom By Design student leaders and representatives from across the country as they share details from ongoing projects and celebrate the successes of our FBD programs. Learn about obstacles others have overcome and the strategies employed to meet design and construction goals. The FBD Task Force invites all to attend and encourages young programs to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from other growing programs including: CalPoly San Luis Obispo, Clemson University, University of North Carolina, Charlotte, and University of Minnesota.

Participants will network with members and hear from the FBD Task Force regarding updates from the national office including many opportunities for programs to take advantage of for funding and recognition. As a continuation of the presentation session, all are invited, and young programs are especially encouraged to participate.
